Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

In the Egypt–Argentina Round of 16 match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review overturned Argentina's winning goal after identifying a foul in the build-up, triggering debate over VAR's consistency.

What is the Video Assistant Referee (VAR)?

A video review system that assists the on-field referee in identifying clear and obvious errors       during a football match

Introduced by the International Football Association Board cin 2016

  • The International Football Association Board (IFAB) develops the Laws of the Game and               approves VAR

FIFA implements VAR in its competitions.

   Founded in 1886
Custodian of the Laws of the Game in association football

  • Members:

                  FIFA

                •  Football Association (England)Scottish

                  Football AssociationFootball Associationof Wales

                  Irish Football Association

How does VAR work?

A team of video officials monitors the match using multiple camera angles from a central               operations room

The VAR team recommends a review if it detects a possible error

The on-field referee may:Accept the recommendation, orConduct an on-field video review            using the pitch-side monitor before making the final decision

   • The final decision always rests with the on-field referee

 When can VAR intervene?

VAR is used only in four match-changing situations:

Goals and offences leading to a goal

  •   • Penalty decisions
  •   • Direct red-card incidents (excluding second yellow cards)
  •   • Mistaken identity in disciplinary decisions

    What are its limitations?
       • Subjective interpretation: Similar incidents may be judged differently by different referees
Inconsistent intervention: Lack of uniform standards on when VAR should recommend a           review
No clear threshold for build-up fouls: The Laws do not define how far back in a move VAR        can review an incident before a goal
       • Communication gap: Players, coaches and spectators often do not know the reasoning             behind VAR decisions.

Conclusion:Technology can strengthen fairness in sport only when supported by transparent rules, consistent implementation and trust in the decision-making process.
