Three Stages to Becoming a Civil Servant
The Civil Services Examination is conducted by UPSC in three successive stages.
Prelims
The Screening Test
Two objective papers held in a single day. Acts as a qualifying filter — marks aren't counted in the final merit.
- Paper I: General Studies (100 Qs, 200 marks)
- Paper II: CSAT (80 Qs, 200 marks, qualifying 33%)
- Negative marking of ⅓ per wrong answer
Mains
The Written Examination
Nine descriptive papers testing depth, clarity and analytical writing. This is where the merit is truly built.

Personality Test
