SC Reserves 33% Seats for Women in Bar Association Committee


Why is it in the news?

  • The Supreme Court has reserved one-third of the seats in the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for women.

More about the news

  • A minimum of three out of nine seats in the executive committee and at least two out of six senior executive members will be reserved for women members of the Bar.
  • Eligible women members can still contest for other posts, ensuring that this reservation does not limit their opportunities.
  • Additionally, one post of the office-bearers of SCBA will be exclusively reserved for women on a rotational basis.
  • The reservation aims to guarantee a minimum representation of women in the SCBA while allowing eligible women members to contest for all posts in the Executive Committee.

·       The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in India is composed of lawyers who are enrolled as members of the Supreme Court of India.

·       Its primary objective is to represent the interests of lawyers practicing in the Supreme Court.

·       The SCBA is dedicated to upholding the standards of the legal profession and promoting the administration of justice.

·       It engages in activities aimed at enhancing the legal system and safeguarding the independence of the judiciary.

·       Governed by its own set of rules and regulations, the SCBA elects office bearers to represent its members and manage its affairs effectively.
