National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC)

Why is it in the news?

  • The Union government has constituted the most recent National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, ensuring representation from the Madiga community, one of the largest Scheduled Caste communities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

More about the news

  • Kishor Makwana, has been appointed as the next Chairperson of the NCSC.
  • Vadepally Ramchander from Telangana’s Peddapalli district and Love Kush Kumar from Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district have been appointed as members of the NCSC.
  • Ramchander’s appointment is significant in response to the long-standing demand of the Madiga community for sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes, aiming to address issues of representation and equitable distribution of benefits and reservations.
  • The Madiga community contends that despite their large population, they face marginalization in accessing benefits and reservations due to the dominance of the Mala community.
