Cheetah gives birth to 5 cubs at M.P.’s Kumo National Park


Why is it in the news?

  • Cheetah ‘Gamini’ gave birth to five cubs in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district, increasing the total number of cheetahs in the country to The cubs born to Gamini bring the total number of cheetah cubs born in India to 13.
  • This marks the fourth cheetah litter on Indian soil and the first litter of cheetahs brought from South Africa.

  • The successful birth of the cubs is attributed to the efforts of forest officers, veterinarians, and field staff in ensuring a stress-free environment for the cheetahs.
  • The cheetah reintroduction project involves the release of Namibian and South African cheetahs into enclosures at Kuno National Park.

Since March last year, 10 cheetahs, including three cubs born to Jwala, have died, leaving the current population in the park comprising seven females, six males, and 13 cubs.
