Why is it in the news?
- The Union Government has chosen to rebrand the current Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) as ‘Ayushman Arogya Mandir’ with the tagline ‘Arogyam Parmam Dhanam,’ emphasizing health as the foremost wealth.
About Ayushman Bharat
- Launched based on National Health Policy 2017 for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
- Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and commitment to “leave no one behind.”
- Aims to shift from a sectoral to a comprehensive need-based health care service.
Components of Ayushman Bharat
Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs)
- 1,50,000 HWCs planned by transforming existing Sub Centres and Primary Health Centres.
- Deliver Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC).
- Cover maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, and provide free essential drugs and diagnostic services.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)
- Launched in 2018.
- Largest health assurance scheme globally.
- Aims to provide Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
- Targets over 12 crores poor and vulnerable families (bottom 40% of the Indian population).
- Selection based on deprivation and occupational criteria of Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 (SECC 2011).
- Formerly known as National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) and subsumed Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) launched in 2008.
- Coverage includes families from RSBY not in SECC 2011.
- Fully funded by the Government, with implementation costs shared between Central and State Governments.
