Why is it in the news?

  • The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), part of ISRO, has developed a multi-purpose app called SAKHI (Space-borne Assistant and Knowledge Hub for Crew Interaction) for the Gaganyaan space flight mission.

SAKHI serves multiple functions including:

  • Providing access to vital technical information and training manuals.
  • Monitoring the health of astronauts by tracking parameters like blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation.
  • Facilitating communication with the ground-based stations and onboard computer.
  • Alerting astronauts about their dietary schedules, hydration, and sleep patterns.


  • The digital platform is designed to be strapped to astronauts’ space suits, ensuring easy access at all times.
  • It eliminates the need for carrying bulky technical documents and manuals by providing all required information digitally.
