New Generation Akash (Akash-NG)


Why is it in the news?

  • DRDO has achieved a successful test of the next-gen Akash missile, showcasing advanced capabilities in air defense.

Significance

  • Represents a major advancement under DRDO’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
  • Developed with indigenization levels above 96%, showcasing a high degree of domestic expertise.
  • Akash-NG is a substantial improvement over the older Akash missile in terms of technology and capabilities.
  • Capable of flying up to an altitude of 25 km and boasts an extended operational range of 30 km.
  • Designed to intercept high-speed, agile aerial threats, enhancing air defence capabilities.
  • Features a two-pulse, solid rocket motor, replacing the old ramjet propulsion system.
  • The weight has been halved to 350 kg, contributing to increased mobility and efficiency compared to the older Akash’s 700 kg.
  • Equipped with a surveillance radar that can detect enemy fighters up to 80 km away.
  • Akash-NG can detect, track, and rapidly shoot down enemy aircraft in seconds.
  • Procured by the Indian Air Force (IAF) with five units deployed for the defence of airfields in the Northeast against potential enemy fighter aircraft.
