Why is it in the news?

  • Scientists have raised concerns about genetic mutations in Mpox, also known as monkeypox, affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

 About Mpox

  • Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, first identified in 1971 in central Africa.
  • Infected individuals develop a rash resembling chickenpox, with transmission occurring through direct contact with infected animals’ blood, bodily fluids, or lesions.
  • There is currently no specific cure for monkeypox, although antiviral medications can help reduce its severity.
