IMT Trilateral Exercise- 2024


Why is it in the news?

  • The IMT Trilateral Exercise-2024 is a joint maritime exercise scheduled from March 21-29, 2024, involving the navies of India, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
  • The inaugural edition of the IMT TRILAT exercise took place in October 2022.

Objectives:

  • To address common threats through training and sharing of best practices.
  • Aimed at improving coordination and compatibility between the participating naval forces.
  • Focused on fostering greater cooperation and coordination in maritime security endeavours.

Phases:

1) Harbour Phase:

  • Interaction between Naval ships Tir and Sujata with respective navies at the ports of Zanzibar (Tanzania) and Maputo (Mozambique).
  • Includes a Planning Conference and joint harbour training activities such as Damage Control, Fire Fighting, Visit Board Search and Seizure procedures, Medical Lectures, Casualty Evacuation, and Diving operations.

2) Sea Phase:

  • Focuses on practical aspects of countering asymmetric threats, Visit Board Search and Seizure procedures, boat handling, manoeuvres, and firing exercises.
  • Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance planned during this phase.
