Why is it in the news?

  • To mitigate elephant fatalities in rail accidents, a sensor system named “Gajraj,” powered by Artificial Intelligence, will be implemented to enhance proactive measures and safeguard elephants from railway accidents.

  • Covers a 700 km railway track across West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu.
  • Utilizes Artificial Intelligence to sense pressure waves generated by elephant movements along tracks.
  • Relies on Optical Fibre cables for detection.
  • Can detect an elephant’s presence up to 200 meters ahead of its arrival on the rail track.
