Why is it in the news?
- Ministry of Heavy Industries launched Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS), 2024.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
- The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is the nodal ministry responsible for implementing the scheme.
- EMPS, 2024 aims to expedite the adoption of electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and three-wheelers (e-3W) to promote green mobility and foster the development of the Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
- The scheme will be effective for a duration of 4 months, from 1st April 2024 till 31st July 2024.
- A committee headed by the Secretary (Heavy Industries) is constituted to oversee the monitoring, sanctioning, and implementation of EMPS, ensuring efficient execution of the scheme.
Components of the Scheme:
- Demand incentives will be provided for e-2W and e-3W to encourage their adoption.
- Administration of Scheme including IEC (Information, Education & Communication) activities and fee for Project Management Agency
Conditions for Availing Demand Incentives:
- Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) must be registered with MHI, and each of their EV models needs approval from MHI.
- Each vehicle model must meet minimum technical eligibility criteria regarding efficiency.
Eligibility:
- Vehicles registered as Motor Vehicles as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules are eligible.
- Only vehicles fitted with advanced batteries qualify for incentives.
