Why is it in the news?

  • Cuttack Rupa Tarakasi, representing silver filigree from Odisha, and Banglar Muslin, a traditional handloom craft from Bengal, have been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

 About the Cuttack Rupa Tarakasi

  • Filigree craftsmanship holds a significant place in classical jewellery design, renowned for its intricate work and luxurious appeal.
  • Historical evidence suggests a possible origin of this craft from Persia, reaching Cuttack via Indonesia around 500 years ago through maritime trade routes.
  • The historical narrative surrounding Ta-Poi highlights maritime connections between Kalinga (historical region in Odisha) and Indonesia, indicating a potential source of inspiration for Cuttack’s silver filigree work.
·       In Odia, ‘Tarakasi’ is a combination of two words – ‘Tara’ (wire) and ‘Kasi’ (design).

About Banglar Muslin

  • This craft involves the creation of the finest muslin fabric from cotton, spun into threads with exceptionally high tensile strength, often ranging from above 300 counts up to 600 counts.
  • Renowned for its superior craftsmanship and unique designs, Banglar Muslin represents the rich textile heritage of Bengal.
