Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Jobs

Why is it in the news?

  • The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) anticipates that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have a significant impact on 40% of jobs, potentially exacerbating existing inequality.

IMF Analysis

  • Around 60% of jobs in advanced economies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, are exposed to the influence of AI. A substantial portion of these jobs, approximately half, may experience negative consequences due to AI integration.
  • Jobs with a high complementarity to AI, such as those in surgery, law, and judiciary, are deemed safer as AI complements human work rather than replacing it entirely.
  • On the contrary, high-exposure jobs with low complementarity, like telemarketing, face a higher risk of being displaced by AI.
  • AI’s ability to perform tasks currently handled by humans raises concerns about reduced labour demand, leading to lower wages and diminished hiring. This potential economic disparity poses challenges that need addressing.
  • The IMF suggests that AI job exposure is significant, reaching 40% in emerging market economies and 26% in low-income countries. The overall total stands just under 40%.
  • There is a concern that AI’s overall impact might worsen global inequality.
  • Political intervention may be necessary to prevent social tensions arising from these disparities.

Positive Aspects of AI

  • AI is recognized for creating new opportunities, particularly in fields like AI development, data analysis, and cybersecurity.
  • AI has the potential to significantly boost productivity and efficiency across various sectors, leading to potential economic growth and job creation.
  • Acknowledging the potential displacement of jobs, AI allows for reskilling and adaptation of workers to new roles, provided there is proper training and support.
  • The net effect of AI on employment remains uncertain, with debates about whether AI will result in job losses due to automation or create more jobs than it displaces.

Way Forward

  • The relationship between AI and job loss is acknowledged as complex and multifaceted, necessitating a nuanced approach to its integration.
  • Managing the transition effectively through reskilling, social safety nets, and responsible AI development is highlighted as essential to mitigate potential negative impacts.
  • A proactive approach to preparing for the impact of AI on jobs ensures that its benefits are accessible to everyone, contributing to a more equitable and prosperous future.
