  • India’s recent donation of $500,000 to the UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund (UNCTF) highlights its ongoing commitment to the global fight against terrorism.
About the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund (UNCTF)

·       Established in 2009 and later integrated into the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) in 2017, the UNCTF is designed to effectively address the evolving challenges of global terrorism. It aims to foster international cooperation and strengthen the capacities of vulnerable regions.

·       The primary focus of the programs funded by UNCTF is to enhance the capacity of member states in eastern and Southern Africa to combat terrorism financing and restrict the movement and travel of terrorists.

·       The fund accepts donations from various contributors, including governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, private institutions, and individual donors.

·       Contributions to UNCTF can be either unrestricted or specifically earmarked for one of UNOCT’s global programs or targeted initiatives.

·       India’s recent financial contribution is directed towards bolstering UNOCT’s initiatives, particularly the Countering Financing of Terrorism (CFT) and the Countering Terrorist Travel Programme (CTTP).

 

About the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT)

·       Established on June 15, 2017, by the United Nations General Assembly.

·       UNOCT serves as a pivotal entity in global counter-terrorism efforts, coordinating and facilitating various initiatives aimed at combating terrorism worldwide.

·       UNOCT provides guidance on counter-terrorism mandates entrusted to the Secretary-General by the General Assembly, ensuring coordination across the United Nations system.

·       The office enhances coordination among entities of the Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, ensuring effective implementation of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
