Why is it in the news?
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the SMART system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha.
About SMART
- The SMART (Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo) system is a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system.
- It can be launched from both coasts and warships, enhancing the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy.
- The SMART system comprises:
1) A long-range supersonic missile carrier capable of traveling up to 643 km.
2) A lightweight torpedo with a range of 20 km.
3) A 50 kg high-explosive warhead as the payload.
- It utilizes a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuators, precision inertial navigation, and a datalink.
- These components enable mid-course updates and terminal homing of the torpedo, enhancing its accuracy and effectiveness.
Significance:
- The SMART system significantly extends the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy beyond conventional ranges.
- It plays a crucial role in countering potential threats, particularly from adversaries like China in the Indian Ocean region.
