NITI Aayog’s ‘Vocal for Local’ Initiative


Why is it in the news?

  • The NITI Aayog’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative was introduced under the Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP), aimed at fostering grassroots entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

 

More about the news

  • The objective is to encourage a spirit of self-reliance among residents of Aspirational Blocks, aiming for sustainable growth and prosperity while driving inclusive growth.
  • It utilizes Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platforms to support entrepreneurs in areas such as e-commerce onboarding, linkages establishment, financial literacy, and digital literacy enhancement.
  • ‘Aakanksha’ Window is established on the GeM portal to showcase indigenous local products from 500 Aspirational Blocks.

 

Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP)

·       Launched in 2023 as an extension of the successful Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP).

·       Focus is on improving governance to enhance the quality of life in underdeveloped blocks across India.

·       Encompasses 500 blocks from 27 states and 4 Union Territories.

·       Monitored across 40 socio-economic indicators categorized under 5 themes: Health and Nutrition, Education, Agriculture and Allied Services, Basic Infrastructure, and Social Development.

Programme Strategy:

·  Convergence: Aligns various Central and state schemes.

·  Collaboration: Involves cooperation among NITI Aayog, Central Ministries, State Departments, District, and block Administration.

·  Competition: Drives competition among blocks, promoting a mass movement towards development.

Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP)

·       Initiated in 2018, initially covering 112 of the most underdeveloped districts across India.

·       Led by States, focuses on identifying each district’s strengths, addressing immediate improvement areas, and monitoring progress through monthly rankings.
