Meghalaya’s Lakadong Turmeric gets GI Tag


Why is it in the news?

  • Lakadong turmeric, a product of Meghalaya, has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Lakadong turmeric boasts a curcumin content ranging from 7 to 12%, significantly higher than the 2 to 3% found in regular turmeric.
  • The elevated curcumin levels contribute to heightened health-aiding properties, as curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • Due to its rich curcumin content, Lakadong turmeric is believed to impart more vibrant colour and robust flavour to culinary dishes compared to regular turmeric.
  • It is organically grown in Meghalaya, emphasizing its natural and sustainable cultivation practices.

  • Garo Dakmanda, a traditional dress from Meghalaya, has received the Geographical Indication tag.
  • Larnai pottery, representing the traditional pottery craft of the region, has also been awarded the GI tag.
  • Garo Chubitchi, an alcoholic beverage with cultural significance, has secured the Geographical Indication tag.
