Why is it in the news?
- India voted in favour of a draft U.N. General Assembly resolution supporting Palestine’s qualification for full U.N. membership.
- The resolution affirmed that Palestine is qualified for U.N. membership as per Article 4 of the U.N. Charter.
- It recommended that the Security Council reconsider the matter favourably in light of this determination.

- An annex to the resolution outlined additional rights and privileges for Palestine, effective from the 79th session of the General Assembly starting in September 2024 which include seating among member states, making statements on behalf of a group, and participating fully in U.N. conferences and meetings.
- As an observer state, Palestine does not currently have the right to vote in the General Assembly or stand for election in U.N. organs.
- The resolution aims to enhance Palestine’s participation and recognition within the U.N. system.
