  • Goldene is created by sandwiching silicon between layers of titanium carbide, then depositing gold onto the structure, allowing gold atoms to replace silicon atoms and forming a monolayer.
  • These sheets are extremely thin, approximately 100 nanometers thick, which is roughly 400 times thinner than the thinnest commercially available gold leaf.
  • Potential applications of Goldene include its use as a catalyst in the electronics industry, for carbon dioxide conversion, hydrogen generation, water purification, and more.
