Why is it in the news?

  • The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi, has developed seed production technology for golden trevally.

About the Species

  • Also known as the golden kingfish, the golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) is a high-value marine fish species.
  • It is characterized by silver-grey coloration with a yellowish belly, scattered black patches, yellow fins, and a black tail. Juveniles exhibit a more golden coloration with attractive black bands, making them popular for aquarium keeping.
  • Golden trevally is found throughout the Indo-West Pacific region, particularly in reef areas in regions such as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka, and Gujarat in India.
  • The species is considered promising for marine aquaculture due to its rapid growth rates, high-quality meat, and significant market demand for both consumption and ornamental purposes.
  • Golden trevally is listed as Least Concern, indicating that it does not face significant threats to its survival in the wild.
